Take Some Time…
In today’s society, so many of us are going through our day-to-day lives at such a quick pace and we are often getting pulled in more than one direction. For those of us who are always trying to give the best of ourselves to everything that is being asked of us, it’s hard not to get overwhelmed, stressed, or even lost along the way, which can sometimes lead us down a path to poor quality of life. Throughout my journey whether it was related to my career or my personal life, I’ve found that the more time I invest in strengthening my foundation (faith, beliefs, values, skills, talents, etc.), the easier it becomes for me to not only get through everything in life, but to also find joy in it all. Here are just a few tips to grow and strengthen throughout all stages of your life:
-
- Take a class or seminar. Although many of us have moved on from “school”, it doesn’t mean the learning has to come to a halt. This is the time for you to choose the type of class or seminar that is of complete interest and benefit to yourself. There are many professional organizations or hobby groups that offer a variety of classes or seminars that will allow you to improve your current skills and learn new ones.
- Read. Reading not only increases your knowledge, but it also improves memory, vocabulary, and focus, while reducing stress and analytical skills. There are tons of books available, don’t be afraid to ask close family, friends, and co-workers for recommendations.
- Watch a video. Pick a few nights out of the week, where you switch up watching the television for watching a video from a well-known personal development expert or a professional in your field. You will not only learn new things, but chances are you will be motivated to make positive changes in your life and at work for the long run.
- Listen to a podcast. This method is easy to do anywhere and has become quite popular. Similar to books, there’s an abundance of podcasts available to fit your needs and interests, whether that be improving your personal self (mentally or spiritually), moving up in your career, or just learning how to take charge of you life.
- Join a group or organization. By doing this, you are allowing yourself to not only be surrounded by other like-minded people who are looking to grow personally or professionally, but they often offer classes or workshops that you could take to continue your growth.
- Get a mentor. This option is great if you’re looking to build your self-confidence, dig deep and find your potential, but also to find balance in your life. A mentor is able to provide unbiased feedback to you as they have nothing to gain or lose with your success. Often times a mentor has been in your shoes so they can share their experiences and provide tips and encouragement to keep you moving in the right direction. A mentor can be found within your organization or you could ask fellow co-workers for recommendations or if there’s a particular co-worker you’d look up to.
- Volunteer. This is not only a great way to give back to the community, but it also allows you to work on skills such as communication and teamwork. Not only will you refine current skills and talents, but you could pick up a few new things and learn how to apply them to your personal or work life. Volunteering is known to bring positive fulfillment and may sometimes aid in lowering the risk of depression and stress.
